Veterans Benefits Information
Some veterans and surviving spouses may be eligible for financial assistance through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to help cover the cost of in-home care and assistance with activities of daily living.
One such program is the VA Aid and Attendance benefit, which provides additional monthly pension payments to qualifying veterans and surviving spouses who meet the VA’s eligibility requirements. Benefit amounts vary based on an individual’s circumstances and are determined by the VA.
The Aid and Attendance benefit may help pay for non-medical assistance with activities such as:
- Bathing and personal hygiene
- Dressing and grooming
- Meal preparation
- Mobility assistance
- Medication reminders
- Other daily living support that helps an individual remain safely at home or in their chosen residence
General Eligibility Considerations
Eligibility is determined by the VA and depends on several factors, which may include:
- The applicant is a qualifying veteran or an eligible surviving spouse.
- The veteran served the required period of active military service during a qualifying wartime period, as defined by the VA.
- The veteran received a discharge other than dishonorable.
- The applicant meets applicable VA income and asset requirements.
- The applicant has a medical need for assistance with activities of daily living or otherwise meets the VA’s criteria for Aid and Attendance.
